Health & Insurance----Mortality in patients with tuberculosis (TB) at most triggered by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). But there are other factors that no less deadly, that cigarettes accounted for 40 million deaths in TB sufferers worldwide.
A scientific report in the British Medical Journal shows, every year smoking accounts for 18 million cases of pulmonary tuberculosis in patients worldwide. Based on these data, estimated in 2050 there will be 40 million deaths in patients with tuberculosis who sparked by a cigarette.
The increase in TB deaths caused by smoking occur evenly in various countries.But specifically the countries in Africa, Mediterranean and Southeast Asia are expected to experience the greatest increase.
"Reducing tobacco consumption will be very effective in reducing the death rate of up to 27 million by 2050," said Sanjay Basu of the University of California, Wednesday (05/10/2011).
Although classified as an ancient disease, until now there is no one country is completely free from tuberculosis. Even so, countries in the tropics generally have a higher incidence rate, including Indonesia, which was ranked fifth and accounted for 5.8 percent of cases worldwide.
Difficult to eradicate tuberculosis, among others, because the infecting organism has begun to mutate. TB germs that have developed resistance to at least two drug combination called a Multiple Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB) while the more resistant again called Extensive Drug Resistant TB (XDR-TB).
The next obstacle in the treatment of tuberculosis and other infections are more dangerous, namely HIV crippling the immune system. Among people with HIV, transmission of TB bacteria become opportunistic infections most casualties.
